Learn About UEMA

The State University of Maranhão, abbreviated UEMA, was founded in 1981. Since its founding, the university has expanded with its headquarters in the federal capital São Luís throughout the state. Today, there is no less than 25 Campi on the territory of the province of Maranhão, at Brazil’s northeast.

This makes the UEMA the largest educational institution in the federal state. The offer of studies ranges from human sciences, technological sciences to artistic subjects. Among the natural sciences, agricultural sciences, Fishing Engeneering, biology and veterinary medicine are of great importance. The studies can be completed with a Liciencatura or a Bacharelado, which corresponds to Lehramt or Bachelor.

In addition, 12 postgraduate degrees such as masters or doctorates are offered. All specializations are affiliated to centers. Currently, 32,000 students are studying at the UEMA, of which 17,668 are in direct study. With UEMANet the university has the possibility to offer distance learning. UEMANet  is today one of the largest in Brazil for distance learning. UEMA cooperates with universities in Europe, North and South America. With the support of the financed by CAPES, CNPq, FAPEMA and their own financial resources for research has steadily increased in recent years.

UEMA has also invested in an International Program creating opportunities for Senior and Junior International Professorships, Post-docs, International scholarships for resident and foreign students, foreign Students are allowed to enroll on Graduate/undergraduate programs (up to 2 semesters) of formal studies or research, English Language acquisition, English Proficiency Testing Center,  among others initiatives.
